About

Shankhachur comes from a family with a strong tradition of Indian Classical Music and has fully devoted his life to this art. Son of the visionary sitarist and Guru Shri Rabindranath Lahiri (disciple of Ustad Dabir Khan),he grew up in an environment imbued with the fragrance of Hindustani music. As a child, he received intensive training in both vocal and tabla from his father and went on to graduate with a Sangeet Visharad in both subjects. He later took advanced talim in tabla from Pt. Sandeep Dev in Kolkata. Currently Shankh, as he is lovingly known in the fraternity, is devoted senior disciple of world renowned tabla maestro Pandit Nayan Ghosh. Besides tabla, Shankh has explored many diversed percussion instruments such as the Pakhawaj, Khol, Cyjon Drum etc.

Shankh has gained a reputation as a very creative and innovative concert performer in both classical and Experimental New Age music genres. He has accompanied and toured with many reputed and front ranking artists such as Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Nayan Ghosh (sitar),Pt.Mukul Shivputra (vocal), Pornima Choudhury(vocal), Dr. Shobha Joshi (vocal), Shri Rattan Mohan Sharma (vocal), Tulika Ghosh (vocal), Tushar Datta (vocal) and many others. He is a regular performer with his elder brother Pulak Lahiri (sitar), and his sister, a young talented vocal exponent Sangeeta Lahiri.

Shankh has performed at major festivals all over the India such as the Pannalal Ghosh Birthday Celebration at SMB in Mumbai, Shruti Festival in Mumbai, Sangeet Research Academy (SRA) at NCPA in Mumbai, Geethsagar 2004 in Kerala, Gangubai Hungle Foundation at Dharwar , National Festival of Music & Dance 2005 at Kottayam, SPICMACAY lecture demonstrations and concerts tour all over Northern India, also he did his successful abroad concert tour in Middle East in Dubai at Petrochem Conference, Learn Quest Festival in Boston (USA), Hindu cultural center in Albany (USA) and many others.

As a Tabla soloist, Shankh has always come across as very independent, creative, colorful and electrified in his traditional presentation. He drew inspiration from great legends like Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakwa, Ustad Amir Hussain Khan, Pt. Anokhelal Mishra and non other than his guruji Pt. Nayan Ghosh. In the field of New Age Experimental fusion music, Shankhachur has worked extensively as a composer and a live/studio percussionist as well. He has had a opportunity to record tracks with the international music group VIVA and perform live with many experimental musicians. Shankh is no stranger to Mumbai club scene either. He had worked as a percussionist at JW Marriott (Juhu Mumbai), along with well known DJ Skam. This duo had gained great popularity with their highly creative experimentation.In addition to being a concert performer, Shankh is a regular faculty member at the renowned institute of classical music, Sangeet Mahabharti at Juhu in Mumbai.

He is also very closely associated with his own non-profit organization SHRUTI SCHOOL OF MUSIC, which is quickly becoming recognized as one of the reputed promoters and propagators of Indian Classical Music in Mumbai. Presently he is doing his concerts tour with many artists in USA and also working as a faculty member in PANDIT JASRAJ SCHOOL OF MUSIC FOUNDATION in Florida (USA).
