Why hire Moira Nelson - Toronto harpist, vocalist, and pianist?
A remarkably versatile artist, songwriter and composer with classical and contemporary musical training, Moira uses her unique voice and mastery of the harp, piano and guitar to create a beautiful and unforgettable mood. Moira's extensive repertoire blends a wide range of styles from Classical and Celtic to Smooth Jazz and beyond.
Moira has released three CDs and performs regularly both as a soloist and with a variety of small ensembles for concerts, weddings, receptions, memorial services, charitable fundraisers, gallery openings, and other private and corporate events.
Voice, Harp, Piano, Guitar
Moira began her musical education with piano lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music.
By the age of 12 she had passed her Grade 10 piano examination and was performing her
own compositions at concerts and recitals. Her studies broadened to include harmony,
composition, voice, and most recently, the harp.
While in high school, Moira made her professional debut as a pianist with a jazz quartet. A
chance encounter during a vacation in England led to extensive appearances in and around London where she worked as a soloist, playing guitar and singing Celtic and traditional music along with her own original songs. Past president of the Toronto Chapter of the ISFHC (International Society of Folk Harpers and Craftsmen), Moira now plays a beautiful 36-string “Enchantress” harp, which was custom designed and built for her.
On her debut album, “Time Calls My Name,” Moira performs all of the vocals and
instrumentals while her second CD, “After The Fall”, includes the talents of Elena Jubinville
(cello, voice), Kathryn Moses (flute) and Rick Lazar (percussion). Both recordings feature
mainly original selections.
Recently, Moira released her third CD, “Echoes of Another Time”, in collaboration with
Elena. This modern take on traditional music blends vocals, harp, guitar, cello, piano and
flutes. From instrumentals to a cappella harmonies, the music is romantic, edgy and totally engaging. The album brings to mind folk music from a classical perspective as it might have been performed in Victorian times – a kind of Celtic Victoriana.
Moira's harp compositions and arrangements have been published in the “Folk Harp Journal” and “HarpLight” and her songs have been performed by choral groups. “Moonfyre”, an original harp composition from Moira's CD “After the Fall”, was selected to appear on a compilation album released in Italy.
“My musical career began when I was four, with an impromptu vocal performance during a
visit to the library with my grandfather. He was not amused, but my future was decided.
Piano lessons soon followed and at my first recital I was so keen to share my newfound skills that I ran for the piano and fell flat on my face. To everyone’s surprise I got up, smiled and played without missing a note - after all, the show must go on. My “show” has grown to include harp, piano, guitar and vocal performances both as a soloist and with my duo, trio and a cappella quartet, in addition to composing arranging and recording. Recently I was actually invited to sing in a library!”
