MIGUEL BONACHEA.
Miguel Bonachea is originally from Santa Clara, Cuba. He taught at the Higher Institute of Art (ISA) and the National School of Music in Cuba, both where he had previously studied. Then he moved to Colombia, teaching at all levels from beginners to advanced students at the Conservatory of Cali where he also held the position of Dean of Music for eight years. In the late 90’s he featured a series of successful workshops for music educators around different cities of Colombia, as well as master classes for students seeking for a professional career. Between 2004 and 2009 Mr. Bonachea taught at the University EAFIT in Medelln, Colombia. In 2010 he taught a course about guitar technique, interpretation and chamber music at the University Juan N. Corpas in Bogota.
As a soloist guitarist Mr. Bonachea has toured in Europe, South America, and the Caribbean making appearance at important events such as the international guitar festivals of Havana, Martinique, Bogota, and Quito; the International Music Festival of Brno, the Contemporary Classical Music Festival of Lima, among many others; as well as playing as a guest soloist with symphonic and chamber orchestras. In Florida he has recently performed at the series “Music in Miami” and “Three Sundays in July” at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, and at the “Second Spanish Language Week” in Palm Beach State College, and had also volunteered with Musicians on Call.
At the II International Guitar Competition of Havana, Miguel Bonachea was awarded with the Third Price, the Special Price from the Jury’s President of Honor; the Special Price for the Best Performance of Cuban Music, and received a special price from the Catalonian luthier Farr-Pratt. At the Music Contest of the National Association of Writers and Artist of Cuba (U.N.E.A.C.) and the National Competition “Amadeo Roldan” he was awarded with the Second Price and the First Price respectively.
Mr. Bonachea also has devoted part of his professional career to contemporary music. He was co-founder of the National Laboratory of Electro-acoustic Music in Havana, lead by composer Juan Blanco, a pioneer in that field in Latin America; and featured as a guest performer at the “Laboratory for Researches on Electro-acoustic of Brussels”, Belgium, for the creation of the work Guitarra Cubana by Leo Kupper. Composers such as Leo Kpper (Belgium), Moiss Bertran (Spain), Andrs Posada (Colombia), and Yalil Guerra (Cuba-USA) have written works specially to be premiered by Miguel Bonachea.
French philosopher, musicologist, and musician Dr. Marc Jean Bernard wrote about him: “In the very selected international world of classical guitar Miguel (Bonachea) is an impeccable and inspired interpreter in the highest meaning of the word, (…) his musical technique and culture of the instrument is based on a deep understanding of aesthetical dimensions of music, (…) he is simultaneously a great guitarist and a great educator.”
