About

Bay Street Brassworks, is one of America's finest and busiest brass ensembles. Founded in 1995, this versatile brass quintet performs a wide variety of musical genres ranging from classical music to Dixieland, Blues, Jazz; Classic Rock, Swing, Ragtime, and any music in between. This professional brass quintet plus percussion is based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Bay Street Brassworks is on the touring rosters of Dow Artists, Russell, Iowa, bringing their music of Bay Street Brassworks to audiences throughout the United States and abroad.

Bay Street Brassworks range of musical abilities has produced engagements ranging from opening ceremonies at Baltimore Orioles baseball games to world premier performances and clinics alongside the American Brass Quintet, Harvey Phillips, Gunther Schuller and Eric Ewazen at the 2004 Brass Chamber Music Forum in Boone, North Carolina, honoring the 50th anniversary of the New York Brass Quintet.

Artistic collaborations with other world-class artists have resulted in performances with members of the Annapolis and New York Brass Quintets, the Baltimore Symphony brass section, principal trumpet of the National Symphony Orchestra Steven Hendrickson and conductor Harlan Parker. Musical explorations have ranged from Tull's Concerto Grosso to Daniel Pinkham's Christmas Cantata.

Bay Street Brassworks has performed at most of the major Universities from coast to coast and is the premiere educational brass ensemble of its kind, having cooperative relationships with a number of Young Audiences state organizations, providing both educational and concert opportunities. The musicians derive great satisfaction from their youth activities and spend considerable amounts of their time encouraging and mentoring young brass players across the country. Currently, Bay Street Brassworks are performing artists for Young Audiences of Maryland, Young Audiences of Colorado, United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County, North Carolina, The Arts Council of Fayetteville / Cumberland County, North Carolina, Johnston County Arts Council, NC, Charlotte, NC Arts and Sciences roster, and the South Carolina Arts Commission. The ensemble has performed hundreds of educational programs, demonstration concerts, master classes, as well as, individual instructional clinics.

In addition to its extensive concert activities, Bay Street Brassworks released their first CD in 2002, entitled "Fresh Off The Boat" Folk Music From Around The World, and their second CD "American Escapades" in 2006. In 2011 Bay Street Brassworks released their third CD titled "Brass on Fire." This CD was nominated in the Classical Category for the Washington Area Music Association's version of the Grammy Award. These recordings have expanded the reach of the ensemble into homes and schools from Florida to Colorado and from Maryland to Korea.

Joan Reinthaler of the Washington Post has described performances of Bay Street Brassworks as being both "friendly and energetic." Among its numerous awards, the Bay Street Brassworks received the first prize at the New York Brass Conference International Brass Quintet Competition in 2003, and two Career Development grants from the Peabody Conservatory

Concert hall stage, recital hall stage, gymnasium stage, colored lighting if possible, and fly bar to lower an American Flag that brass quintet will provide

TECHNICAL RIDER
[For Concerts]

GENERAL INFORMATION

NOTE: All deviations from this rider must be approved by Bay Street Brassworks

CONTACT: Each presenter should receive a minimum of two-telephone contacts before the arrival of the Bay Street Brassworks. A representative of Bay Street Brassworks will contact the local presenter and/or the Venue Technical Director approximately two weeks prior to the first engagement, and again approximately 24-48 hours before the performance date to reconfirm. Please give us the most appropriate contact information to discuss the technical details.

ARRIVAL TIME: Upon initial contact, Bay Street Brassworks will provide the actual arrival time. This is usually four (4) hours prior to the concert.

If no contact by Bay Street Brassworks is received, please contact the Bay Street Brassworks at (866) 229-7878 and we will arrange for a Bay Street Brassworks representative to contact you.

REHEARSAL REQUIREMENTS: Auditorium should be available for rehearsal for approximately two hours on the day prior to the performance and on the day of the performance. If the auditorium is not available please provide a suitable local venue for rehearsal. A Bay Street Brassworks representative will contact the presenter two weeks prior to the engagement and again no later than 24 hours before Bay Street Brassworks arrival, to schedule rehearsal time, if necessary.

RECEPTIONS: Bay Street Brassworks is happy to attend receptions. Due to the rigorous tour schedule, however, sometimes Bay Street Brassworks may not be available. Before attending a reception, the BSB will need to complete their touring duties and equipment load-out. Please clear all receptions in advance with the representative of the tour upon initial contact. Bay Street Brassworks will ALWAYS to try accommodate each specific request

STAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Number of people in touring company: 6
Number of people performing on stage: 6


1. Stage Area: A minimum cleared stage area of 32'x 16' is necessary for performance space.

2. Music stands: Five (6) black, Manhasset-style stands.

3. Direct access to house from stage: Either steps or ramp, preferably on stage left and right.

4. Tables: Two (2) or three (3) tables, or other suitable storage place, on each side of stage in wings (for cases and equipment).

5. Dressing rooms: Minimum of two (2) rooms (one room for 3 people; one room for 3 people) containing chairs, counter space, mirrors and place to hang clothes. Restroom facilities are also required. If restrooms are outside the dressing rooms, they must be reserved only for Bay Street Brassworks - not to be used by the public. Signs indicating "BAY STREET BRASSWORKS" should be placed on dressing room and restroom doors.

6. Percussion: Two or three 4' x 8' risers in center of the concert stage to be able to hold a full size drum kit.

7. Sound: Bay Street Brassworks is essentially "acoustic", however, in large halls (2,500 seats or more) some ambient amplification may be needed. Generally, this is done with 4 to 6 condenser mics (AT4041, AKG451, SM81 or equal) all on tall boom stands. If this is the case, please contact us well in advance of the performance date.

The following is needed for ALL concerts:
A. Wireless microphone one (1) hand held wireless microphone for concert narration with a mute switch to be controlled by the sound technician off stage. The microphone is to be on while any member of the group speaks and muted during the performance of each musical selection.
B. House speakers If house sound comes from a cluster above the stage, it is requested that a fill is added with additional speakers on stage. Sound system must include at least 1 third octave EQ. (In the event fill speakers are used, please have a separate EQ on fill speakers).
C. Four (4) sound channels narration; solos; CD playback, (In the event additional mics are used, we would require up to ten channels).
D. CD Player for use to play a CD before the concert, during intermission and after the concert. (Note: We will be using CDRs, so please be sure your player will play them).

Sound Notes: There will be pre-concert and intermission music on CD. Bay Street Brassworks will provide CD.


8. Lights (See separate LIGHTING AND SOUND CUE SHEET)
Bay Street Brassworks will utilize house lighting system and will provide a lighting plot accordingly. Ideally, cues should be recorded into the computer and operated by the house lighting tech.

Note to concert venues, public schools and churches: It is understood that it is not always possible to accommodate the following lighting specs. Presenter is not expected to incur cost to bring in additional lighting.

Following are basic lighting requests:
A. Specials
Downstage center special (lit from front and above)
(Optional) Downstage left and right specials (lit from front and above)
B. Basic wash
The basic wash should be focused on Bay Street Brassworks area only.
Please mix some reds, blues, greens and yellows into general wash. It reflects nicely off the brass instruments Plenty of overhead and front lighting.
C. Red and Blue Washes - If instruments are available, a red wash and a blue wash will be appreciated.
D. Cyc - If you have a well-lit cyc, we will use it throughout the show (Colors: red, blue; if possible, also green and amber).

9. Crew (Note: We recommend for the crew to be available four (4) hours prior to performance for lighting and sound set-up)
A. Light Tech. Once lights are hung and gelled, a minimum of 2-4 hours is required for focusing and writing/rehearsing cues.
B. Sound Tech. Time needed is dependent on whether additional mics are required for entire group. Generally, once equipment is in place, sound can be done in no longer than one hour.




Stage should be preset as much as possible before arrival of Bay Street Brassworks: swept clean, cleared of all equipment and debris, sound system set up and in place with five (5) stands on stage.




10. Merchandise: one or two tables in lobby to sell Bay Street Brassworks merchandise, as well as one or two salespersons. Sales will occur primarily at intermission and after the performance. Pre-concert sales occur on occasion.

No video is allowed.
