With the transition from soul to R&B in the 1980s, Luther Vandross, Prince and Whitney Houston rose in popularity. This newer contemporary R&B combined elements of soul, funk, dance, and hip hop. The abbreviation R&B is almost always used instead of the full rhythm and blues term, although contemporary R&B is also referred to as urban contemporary.
